A. The Chairperson shall make best efforts to select a Tribal Historic Preservation Officer who is a member of Wilton Rancheria. In the event that the Chairperson is unable to identify a qualified and willing tribal member, the Chairperson may consider other qualified candidates.

B. At the time of selection, the Chairperson may select the Executive Director of the Department of Cultural Preservation or any other current employee of the Tribe to serve as the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer in addition to their other employment duties. In the alternative and subject to the tribal budget, the Chairperson may hire a new full-time or part-time employee to serve exclusively as the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer.

C. The Chairperson shall select a Tribal Historic Preservation Officer with a high level of knowledge of tribal customs and traditions.

D. Mission. The Tribal Historic Preservation Officer will assume responsibility for perpetuating the Tribe’s Miwok and Nisenan heritage through preservation and protection of the Tribe’s culture, history, language, and traditions for present and future generations.

E. The duties of the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer shall be to:

1. Assume responsibility and stewardship for cultural remains and artifacts of Miwok and Nisenan Indians.

2. Document and preserve the Tribe’s history, culture, and traditions.

3. Increase understanding and knowledge of the culture and heritage of the Tribe.

4. Protect and preserve the legacy of the Tribe’s ancestors.

5. Support the continuity of the Tribe’s culture for future generations. (Res. 2022-10 (Exh. A); Res. 2017-20)
